Kagi Maldives Relaunch: Overwater Spa, Retreats and a New Era of Wellbeing

ree

When it comes to wellness travel, the Maldives has long been the stage for dreamy island escapes where palm-fringed villas meet overwater spas. Yet few resorts have leaned into this philosophy as wholeheartedly as Kagi Maldives Resort & Spa, which officially reopened this September after a period of transformation. With an expanded wellness hub, new therapies, and the launch of immersive multi-day retreats, Kagi is repositioning itself as one of the most ambitious destinations for those seeking not just relaxation, but deep rejuvenation.

At the heart of the relaunch is the resort’s Baani Spa, now the largest overwater wellness hub in the Maldives at 1,500 square metres. More than just a spa, Baani is envisioned as a sanctuary of renewal led by two newly appointed experts: Aditi Tandon, a yoga teacher and holistic wellness practitioner, and Ni Nyoman “Sally” Saliani, a veteran spa director with over 25 years of experience across luxury properties from Bali to Fiji. Together, they’ve crafted a programme that blends traditional therapies with innovative wellness concepts, rooting the experience in Kagi’s “Pure Life” philosophy.

A New Generation of Treatments

The reopening introduces a suite of new treatments designed with the modern traveller in mind. The Jet Lag Recovery massage is a thoughtful nod to the long-haul journeys most guests endure before reaching the Maldives, easing muscle tension while helping to reset circadian rhythms. For those whose holiday enthusiasm leads to a little too much time in the sun, the Sunburn Soother offers a cooling, restorative therapy to repair overexposed skin. Perhaps the most intriguing, however, is Baani Secrets, the resort’s signature ritual launching in October. Combining restorative massage, anti-ageing facial techniques, and even an ear massage, it concludes with moringa tea — a detoxifying flourish that ties the whole experience together.

The Baani Wellness Retreat

The most significant addition is the launch of multi-day retreats, each structured to provide guests with a holistic journey. Options span three, four, or five days, priced from £395, with daily 90-minute sessions tailored to personal goals. The three-day programme includes treatments like body scrubs, massages, and sound healing, while the five-day itinerary extends to Thai massage and meditation. Whether the aim is balance, recovery, or pure indulgence, the retreats promise more than just spa pampering — they’re curated journeys of renewal.

Beyond treatments, Tandon leads a weekly schedule of complimentary activities, from sunrise yoga and pranayama meditation to evening sound journeys. For those seeking something more personalised, private sessions in yoga, reiki, chakra balancing, and fitness training are also available. It’s this layering of group and individual experiences that elevates Kagi above the standard Maldivian spa stay.

Food, Ocean, and Sustainability

Wellness at Kagi doesn’t stop at the spa. The culinary philosophy echoes the same ethos of balance and freshness, with Pacific Rim fusion at Ke-Un, international dining at Noo Faru, and Italian specialities at Nonna. Health-conscious dishes can be enjoyed at the Spa Corner, while the Wine Cellar offers a curated selection for those who want indulgence with their mindfulness.

Sustainability also plays a central role. Kagi’s house reef is home to over 150 marine species, and the resort has introduced its first coral nursery, nurturing fragments before transplanting them back into the reef. Motorised water sports are off the menu, with guests instead encouraged to explore by snorkel or paddleboard, connecting to the natural environment at a gentler pace.

An Intimate Escape

With just 50 villas — each complete with a private pool, sun deck, and open-air bathroom — Kagi offers a more boutique experience than many of its Maldivian counterparts. Rates start from £520 per night, positioning the resort firmly in the luxury category, yet the focus on wellness and personalisation makes it stand out in a crowded market.

As Ahmed Shaheen, Chief Commercial Leader at Crown & Champa Resorts, put it: “This relaunch strengthens our vision of creating meaningful, transformative experiences in the Maldives.” For travellers craving more than a picture-perfect escape, Kagi Maldives now offers a deeper invitation: to restore, to reset, and to reconnect — all in one of the most beautiful settings on earth.

Pink Pound Rating: 3.5 / 5

  • Inclusivity & Welcome: 4/5

  • Staff Attitude: 4/5

  • Destination Safety: 2.5/5

  • LGBTQ+ Effort: 3/5

Verdict: Kagi Maldives is a safe, stylish, and intimate choice for LGBTQ+ travellers seeking a luxury wellness retreat. The resort bubble provides comfort and discretion, but given the Maldives’ wider legal stance, Kagi scores a 3.5/5 on the Pink Pound Rating — recommended, with the caveat that inclusivity could be made more visible in future.
